Phong Nha, the cave capital of Vietnam, is about 450 km south of Ninh Binh. This is the longest common hop on the north-to-centre route, and the one where people most often regret the cheap option.
Vos options
| L'heure | Prix | Quoi de prévu | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Night train to Dong Hoi | About 8 hours + 45 min taxi | Around 600,000 to 900,000 VND per person | The train stops in Dong Hoi, 45 minutes from Phong Nha. Beds are basic, arrival is early morning. Doable, but plan a slow first day. |
| Sleeper bus | 8 to 9 hours, overnight | Around 400,000 to 550,000 VND per person | The budget classic. Cramped beds, several stops, arrival before dawn. Fine at 22, less fun with kids or a bad back. |
| Voiture privée | About 7 hours | From 4,800,000 VND per car | A daytime drive with lunch on the way, arriving rested in the afternoon. Break the trip in Vinh if you prefer two short days. |
Notre conseil honnête
If the night train fits your style, it is a fair option on this route, better than the bus. The car wins on flexibility and daylight: you travel when you want and can stop where you want, and for 3 or 4 people the per-person price is close to first-class train berths.
Going further south? Phong Nha to Hue is easy to add, see Ninh Binh à Hue.
