How to Get from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha

Your guide in Ninh Binh, Tam Coc & Trang An

Phong Nha, the cave capital of Vietnam, is about 450 km south of Ninh Binh. This is the longest common hop on the north-to-centre route, and the one where people most often regret the cheap option.

Your options

TimePriceWhat to expect
Night train to Dong HoiAbout 8 hours + 45 min taxiAround 600,000 to 900,000 VND per personThe train stops in Dong Hoi, 45 minutes from Phong Nha. Beds are basic, arrival is early morning. Doable, but plan a slow first day.
Sleeper bus8 to 9 hours, overnightAround 400,000 to 550,000 VND per personThe budget classic. Cramped beds, several stops, arrival before dawn. Fine at 22, less fun with kids or a bad back.
Private carAbout 7 hoursFrom 4,800,000 VND per carA daytime drive with lunch on the way, arriving rested in the afternoon. Break the trip in Vinh if you prefer two short days.

Our honest advice

If the night train fits your style, it is a fair option on this route, better than the bus. The car wins on flexibility and daylight: you travel when you want and can stop where you want, and for 3 or 4 people the per-person price is close to first-class train berths.

Going further south? Phong Nha to Hue is easy to add, see Ninh Binh to Hue.
