North Vietnam with Kids: A 10 Day Family Itinerary

Travelling North Vietnam with children is wonderful, if you get one thing right: an easy pace. No night buses, no 7 hour drives, no dragging luggage between stations. On this route no drive is longer than about 5 hours, you stay at least two nights in each place, and it mixes sights with things kids actually enjoy.

The route

Days 1-2: Hanoi. Your driver meets you at arrivals. Water puppet theatre, the train street, ice cream by the lake.

Days 3-4: Mai Chau. About 3.5 hours from Hanoi. A green valley made for cycling with kids: flat, quiet, friendly. About 30 minutes past Mai Chau are the Bo Am hot springs, a warm natural pool that children love.

Days 5-7: Ninh Binh. About 4 hours from Mai Chau. The boat trip through the caves feels like an adventure ride, goats stand on the cliffs, and bikes fit the flat lanes. Visit Silk Hoa Lu, where kids can touch real silkworms, or do a family cooking class.

Days 8-9: Cat Ba island. About 5 hours from Ninh Binh, with the car ferry. A Lan Ha Bay boat day with swimming and kayaking, plus a beach afternoon.

Day 10: Cat Ba to Hanoi airport. About 4.5 hours with the car ferry, timed to your flight.
