The Ha Giang Loop by Car: For Everyone Who Skips the Motorbike

Everyone has seen the videos: backpackers on motorbikes on the Ma Pi Leng pass. What the videos do not show: you can drive the exact same loop by car. Same road, same views, no helmet hair, no rain gear, no risk.

Who this is for

Families, couples who do not ride, anyone over the age where falling off a motorbike is funny, and everyone who wants to look at the view instead of the road. The loop is spectacular from a car window, and you can stop at every single viewpoint.

The route, 4 days

Day 1: Hanoi to Ha Giang city. About 6 hours on good roads. Sleep at the foot of the mountains. Or start from Ninh Binh, see the route page.

Day 2: Ha Giang to Dong Van. Over Quan Ba pass, through Yen Minh, past the karst plateau. The scenery changes every twenty minutes.

Day 3: Dong Van to Meo Vac, over Ma Pi Leng. The famous stretch. Stop at the skywalk, take the boat on the Nho Que river in the canyon below.

Day 4: Meo Vac back to Ha Giang, via Du Gia. The quiet southern road through Du Gia village, with a swim at the waterfall. Day 5: return to Hanoi or Ninh Binh.
