Noi Bai airport lies north of Hanoi. Ninh Binh lies south. There is no direct train or bus, so after a long flight this is the transfer where most people are happy they arranged something in advance.

Why we recommend the car here
On other routes the bus is a fair choice. This one is different. You just landed, you are tired, you have luggage, and the bus option means crossing Hanoi first. The direct drive takes 2 hours instead of 4, and the price difference for a family or a couple is small once you count the extra taxis.
