Sa Pa: Rice Terraces and Mountain Villages

Sa Pa is the best known mountain area in Vietnam, and that is both good and bad. The town itself has grown fast and is busy. But walk one hour out of town, into the Muong Hoa valley, and you find the terraces and villages that people come for.

What you can do
- Walk through the valley From Sa Pa down to Lao Chai and Ta Van. Three to four hours, mostly downhill.
- Stay in a village Sleeping in Ta Van or Lao Chai is much quieter than the town.
- Go up Fansipan The highest mountain in Vietnam. Cable car to the top, or two days walking.
- Visit a market Bac Ha market on Sunday is the biggest one in the area.
Good to know
- Skip the town centre if you can. Stay in a village instead.
- Green terraces are June to August. Golden rice is September.
- Winter is cold and wet, and it sometimes snows.
- Guides from the villages know the paths and the families. Worth taking one.
