Ninh Binh in February: Tet, Weather & What to Expect

Lanterns at night during Tet, the lunar new year, in Ninh Binh

February is the month of Tet, the Vietnamese lunar new year. It is a special time to be in Ninh Binh: the weather is cool and misty, the fields turn fresh green, and the biggest pilgrimage season of the year begins at Bai Dinh Pagoda.

Weather in February

Daytime temperatures are around 16 to 21 degrees. February is known for its fine drizzle, a very light rain that hangs in the air and makes everything soft and grey. It rarely pours, but things stay damp.

Mornings are often misty. The karst mountains rising out of the mist are a classic North Vietnam picture.

The rice fields in February

The young rice has just been planted, so the fields turn bright, fresh green during February. The mirror-like water is still visible between the young plants, which is lovely from the boat.

Tet: the lunar new year

Tet usually falls in February. It is the most important holiday in Vietnam. On the first day of Tet almost everything is closed and streets are quiet, because families celebrate at home. From day two or three, life returns and there is a festive mood everywhere.

Our tours run during Tet, but book transport and hotels early because Vietnamese families travel a lot in this period. Read more in our guide to what is open and closed during Tet.

Bai Dinh festival season

From the sixth day of the lunar new year, Bai Dinh Pagoda opens its spring festival, the biggest Buddhist pilgrimage season in Vietnam. It continues all spring. Expect a lively, spiritual atmosphere and many Vietnamese visitors, especially on weekends.

Best things to do in February

Visit Bai Dinh during the festival, take a misty morning Trang An boat tour, and enjoy the festive Tet mood in the villages. Photographers love the mist this month.

What to pack

A light waterproof jacket, layers, and shoes that can handle damp paths. An umbrella is useful for the drizzle.

A perfect day in February

Begin at Bai Dinh Pagoda around 8 am, before the pilgrim buses arrive, and give it two hours: the complex is huge. Take the boat at Trang An before lunch, when the drizzle usually pauses. In the afternoon, cycle a short loop through the wet green fields around Tam Coc; the mist makes the villages look timeless. If Tet falls in your week, plan around the first day, when everything is closed, and enjoy the festive evenings after it.
