About Cuc Phuong National Park

Cuc Phuong National Park is the largest national park in Vietnam and also one of the most important biodiversity sites in the country. It’s located in Ninh Binh province, about 120 kilometers southwest of Hanoi, and spreads across three provinces.

Established in 1962, the park is the oldest in Vietnam, spanning over 22,000 hectares. It’s covered by a tropical rainforest and characterized by karst mountains and lush valleys.

The park boasts an impressive range of flora and fauna, with over 2,000 species of trees, some of which are over 1,000 years old. It’s home to a variety of mammal species, including the Asian black bear, northern white-cheeked gibbon, and the endangered Delacour’s langur, among others. It’s also rich in bird species, with over 300 recorded species, making it a paradise for bird watchers.

The park also contains evidence of human habitation dating back thousands of years, including cave dwellings and prehistoric tools, making it a site of significant archaeological interest.

Tourist activities in the park include hiking, exploring the caves, bird-watching, and visiting the conservation centers. The park offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of Vietnam and to learn about conservation efforts in the country.

Conservation centers

Cuc Phuong National Park is home to several important conservation centers. These centers play a crucial role in the park’s mission to protect and conserve Vietnam’s native wildlife, while also working to educate the public about the importance of biodiversity and conservation.

Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC)

This center focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of Vietnam’s endangered and critically endangered primate species. The EPRC is home to about 150 primates representing 15 species.

Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program (CPCP)

Established in 1995, the CPCP focuses on the conservation of small carnivores and pangolins. Their work includes rescue, rehabilitation and release of animals confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade, as well as research and education.

Turtle Conservation Center (TCC)

The TCC is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of Vietnam’s native turtle species, many of which are threatened by hunting and habitat loss.

Cuc Phuong Botanical Garden

While not a conservation center in the traditional sense, the botanical garden is an important part of the park’s conservation work. The garden cultivates both common and endangered plant species from around Vietnam, and serves as a center for botanical research and education.
